Resettlement of Mongolian Capital City

Tusheet Khan Gombodorj’s son Zanabazar was honored as the first Bogd Jivzundamba khutugt in 1639 and he founded the current capital city Urgoo, at Burd soum of Uvurkhangai aimag. After moving 29 times along the valleys of the Orkhon, Tamir, and Tuul rivers, our capital settled in its current location in 1778 and was named Ikh Khuree. In 1756, the first religious school, “Tsanig”, was established. Between 1780 and 1870, more than 70 settled temples and shrines were established, most notably the current Gandantegchenlin Monastery in 1809 and the Russian Consulate in 1861. Many of the monasteries that were established in Mongolia did not develop into cities. However, historians believe that the development of Ikh Khuree into a city was due, firstly, to its location along the main Russian-Mongolian-Chinese trade road, and secondly to changes in the economic situation of Mongolia.
